Railway Freight Car Air Reservoir: A Key Part of the Air Brake System

Ever since railways began using compressed air as the driving force for braking, brake valves of every type have relied on compressed air to control the braking and release of a train. As the vessel that stores this compressed air, the air reservoir has become an indispensable part of the air brake system.

Storing the Air that Powers the Brakes

Mounted beneath the car body, the reservoir accumulates air supplied by the locomotive compressor and releases it on demand, giving the system a stable and repeatable braking response. Without a reliable reservoir, a train simply could not brake safely or smoothly.

Classification by Function

According to its role in the braking system, the air reservoir can serve as a supply reservoir, an auxiliary reservoir, an accelerated release reservoir, a pressure reduction chamber, and more.

TypeFunction
Supply reservoirStores compressed air as the main air source for the brake system.
Auxiliary reservoirHolds the air charge that powers service braking of each car.
Accelerated release reservoirSpeeds up brake release so the train recovers quickly.
Pressure reduction chamberHelps regulate and step down pressure within the control valves.

Maintenance Technical Requirements

Air reservoirs must be maintained according to strict technical requirements, covering appearance inspection, welding repair, hydrostatic testing and painting.

  • Appearance inspection: The reservoir must be cleaned externally, with sand, dust and oil removed. Cracks in the original welds of each reservoir (auxiliary reservoir, pressure reduction chamber, accelerated release reservoir, etc.) must be repaired by welding. The body must be replaced when cracked or seriously corroded — for a 4 mm original wall a depth of 2 mm, and for a 2.5 mm original wall a depth of 1 mm.
  • Welding repair: The weld area must be laid flat, rust and dirt cleaned away, and the current adjusted. If burn-through or incomplete penetration occurs, the current must be readjusted. The arc crater must be filled when extinguishing the arc; weld bead unevenness must not exceed 1 mm and weld width difference must not exceed 3 mm; slag must be removed after welding; and the weld must have no cracks, porosity, slag inclusion or undercut.
  • Hydrostatic strength test: The auxiliary reservoir is connected to the hydro tester, filled with clean water and the drain plug tightened, then pressurized to 900 kPa and held for 3 minutes with no water seepage. Any seepage requires welding repair and re-testing. After welding and testing, the interior must be blown clean with compressed air, and during the single-car test one further pressure dust removal is carried out.
  • Painting: After passing inspection, a uniform coat of anti-rust primer is applied to the outside where the original primer has peeled off, followed by a topcoat once dry.
